I thought I was buying used. Needless to say, I can't open it now. It's out of print. So I guess you could say I couldn't be happier.
Also it looks like the special features are almost identical. Each one has one thing the other doesn't. So it all works out. I highly recommend the Gold or Anniversary editions.
While not as well-known as A lost Disney classic! While not as well-known as other animated films from the House of Mouse, this spin on the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander is darker than most Disney offerings.
No sing-a-long songs, but the music by Elmer Bernstein was suitable for the tone of the movie. Younger children or Disney fans expecting singing bunnies might not appreciate the Black Cauldron for what it is Disney's first PG rated animated film.
This is one of my favorite Disney movies and I'm always surprised how few people remember it, maybe that's a bad sign.
I think it's just the time it was produced. It doesn't have the feel of most Disney movies, I think it's vastly underrated. If you cringe at stupid singing, dumb princesses, and your average Disney-movie-elements, give this film a try.
Here's your Necromancer if ever there was one, and it's cool as heck! In terms of your run-of-the-mill Disney movie, this does not deliver. It doesn't have songs and the theme and over-all feeling is different.
The skeletons and darker elements in the Horned King's castle may frighten very young children maybe those under 6 years old , judge your child's ability to enjoy the movie by their personal tolerance and likes if they don't like skeletons and such, do not show them this movie.
As a child, I loved it, without fear or issue and I was a pretty big baby and overly sensitive. A lot of people hate on this movie but I think it's rad.
Originally it was too dark, so they tried to lighten the mood but it still got a PG rating. It's really pretty tame though, can't see it actually scaring many kids these days.
But it has beautiful hand-drawn Disney animation, and a good story. Seems like many people these days have never even heard of this movie, much less seen it.
It definitely gets no love from Disney anymore. But I remember really liking this movie as a kid and wanted my kids to like it as well they sort of did.
Also, I wanted them to watch something that was a little different from the bulk of kids movies these days that are either overly sweet or completely idiotic It seems funny that this is the "25th Anniversary version" as we're now coming up to the 35th anniversary It's a fun movie But overall, a great movie to add to your collection One person found this helpful.
Both those titles fell flat of the author as well Bakshi cuz he couldn't get funding for more. A shame noone seems to be considering Alexander's epic "The Chronicles of Prydain".
This is a hodge-podge of the first 3 books. A Great screen writer might do that in 1 movie, this one just leaves you disappointed and confused, cherry picking scenes with no context.
Not entirely sure how an audience with zero expectations would take this, but I imagine much like the original box office. I had the Bakshi LoR jiggsaw puzzle!
No singing! This must have passed me by as a kid but I did know the cartoon existed. After reading reviews that this was not Disney's best or it was too scary for children, I had to see it myself.
I couldn't disagree more with any negative comments on this movie. It appears most reviews here on Amazon seem to agree, as well.
It's a great animated adventure by Disney. I will go as far to say it's now one of my favorite Disney films now. It has a good story and even funny at times.
The painted sceneries really add to the atmosphere of the movie. Plus, there's no singing. While I don't mind singing on some films and nice to have a break from it.
I just wish it was available on Blu-ray. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. The Black Cauldron is a American animated feature dark fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and originally released to theaters on July 24, The twenty-fifth animated feature in the Disney Animated Canon and Disney's first PG-rated animated film, the film is based on Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain book series, which is in turn based on Welsh mythology.
The film centers around the evil Horned King who attempts to secure the Black Cauldron in order to rule the world. A video game based on the film was released in The film is notorious for being a major box office disaster for the Disney company and being considered one of the worst entries in the Disney Animated Canon along with Home on the Range and Chicken Little.
Though, the film has gained a cult following. This is a film that really made an impression on me when I saw it in the cinema as a child. Not normally a fan of the saccharine Disney style, I hadn't been keen to go and see it.
However, I came away from the cinema with a totally different opinion of Disney. This is a much darker film than their usual fare, with the usual schmaltz mixed with a good dose of what can only be described as horror.
Telling the tale of Taran, a pig keeper who gets mixed up in the war against the Horned King, who needs the magical and evil Black Cauldron of the title in order to bring alive his army of undead warriors.
There are the usual Disney elements here - talking animals, comedy villain sidekicks and moral lesson. But much, much, darker than usual with the demonic Horned King voiced by an underused John Hurt , and armies of skeletal spectral warriors creeping across the land.
I loved it then, and I love it now. I'm not sure the U certificate is totally appropriate, I think a PG would be better. As a 9 yr old kid I know it gave me nightmares!
This is a nice presentation, 5. In widescreen. The colours seem a bit washed out and dingy at times, but if memory serves it was like that in the initial cinema release.
Well worth getting, especially for those looking for something a little different from the usual Disney fare. I remember that I was so little when I saw this.
The only memory of it was the sadness I felt but I didn't remenber what made me sad. Many years latter I foung the books on a book fair, and the memories returned.
I got the Chronicles of prydain that were used to make this animation and I got this dvd.
